For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. — Romans 1:16

It was a great experience many years ago traveling for work. As I traveled, I was able to see many of the amazing sights and meet a lot of interesting people across the country. Each time I met someone, the first question they would often ask me is, “Where are you from?”

It was obvious that I was not from New York, Boston, California, or Texas. My accent from North Carolina carried through everywhere I went. At one stop, it was almost a joke for the people that I met. They would talk about it and hearing the conversations made me self-conscious and almost ashamed of my accent.

The accent was not something I heard on my own, but I made a conscious effort to focus on how I said certain words. Soon, I realized that the accent was part of who I am. There was nothing about having an accent that I should be ashamed of. Instead, I should focus on being true to who I am.

In Paul’s statement here in Romans, he starts that he is not ashamed of the gospel. It was his identify, as apart from salvation we are all nothing. Paul realized that it was an important part of him, a defining part of who he was. That’s nothing to be ashamed of!

The world may pressure us to hide our Christian faith. They may want us to be silent or quiet, but we have no reason to be ashamed. We should share our faith and share the gospel any opportunity we can. Our mentality should be that we are not ashamed, because it is part of who we are.
