But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations. —  Psalm 102:12

Not long ago, I was talking with someone and sharing a story with them about my grandfathers. Both of them were preachers in their time on this earth, but both came to that from differing perspectives. On my dad’s side, my grandfather served in World War 2, played minor league baseball, and was a truck driver before becoming a full time pastor. On my mom’s side, my grandfather worked for a local oil distributor for as long as I can remember.

As I was talking, I shared with someone a few memories that I have of both of them. I remember working on various projects around the house with one grandfather, and being able to hear him preach on a few occasions as well. For the other, I remember riding the tractor around his property, and hearing him preach.

The memories that I have are wonderful memories that I treasure, but those memories will not last forever. For example, my son will not remember either of my grandfathers, because he never met them. He never shared those experiences with them. Those memories will fade away with my generation.

Just as those memories will fade with my generation, what about our future generations remembrance of God? Will they remember how God blessed, healed, and moved in the lives of their family and friends? Or, will this be the generation that the memory and love of God passes away forever?

Future generations need to have experiences hearing about God to establish memories that they will never forget. This means older generations living for God, talking about God, and sharing about God. If we don’t, there will eventually be a generation that does not know or remember God.
