And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? — Mark 4:21
When he was younger, my son was fascinated with flashlights. If he found a flashlight anywhere in the house, he would quickly take it, run to the closest room, turn off the lights, and begin to play all sorts of imaginary games. There were monsters and ghosts, and he even loved to try to scare people.
There was just one problem. Anytime I needed a flashlight for something, I couldn’t find one! There were so many times that I searched all across the house trying to find a flashlight. Finally, he started to understand when I said I was looking for the flashlight, what I meant. He would often run and try to find one in his room for me.
Scripture often refers to Christians as having a light and being the light in this world. Our lives are to shine for God amid all the darkness and evil. But far too many Christians are playing with their lights instead of letting their lights shine for God.
The purpose of a light is that it is in a place to shine. The scripture uses the example of a candlestick. It’s the same reason we don’t install the main lights in our home behind furniture. We do not put our desk lamps under a desk. We put them in a place to give the most light.
Our world needs light more than ever. Instead of playing with our lights, we need to let our lights shine for God. We need to show others there is still a God and He is still on the throne. We can do this by shining our light brightly. Where is your light? Is it shining in its place?
