But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. — Psalm 73:2

Many years ago, I made the decision that I wanted to buy a motorcycle. At the time, several of my friends had them, and I thought it would be fun to buy one and ride with them. So, I purchased a motorcycle, and one of my friends helped me bring it home. While I had ridden dirt bikes before, I had never spent much time on a street bike.

I spent time going up and down the road, learning to ride. I would take it on short trips, and then, as my confidence grew, I would take longer trips. But I never fell in love with riding the motorcycle, and never would after one summer evening. After leaving home, I ended up having an accident on the motorcycle, which led to me sliding through the grass and across a small field.

By the grace of God, I wasn’t hurt in the accident. But as I picked up the motorcycle to take it home, I looked around the field. I had missed fence posts, a light pole, and countless other objects that could have hurt me.

I often think about that moment when I read this verse in Psalm 73. The Psalmist had just described God’s goodness, but then he says, “But as for me.” The idea is that I had almost fallen, I was almost taken out, or I was in a bad place. But God’s grace looked after me and brought me through.

We can all probably relate to moments like this in our lives. Moments when we were about to fall. Moments we were in a slippery place in life about to go under. But God took care of us and brought us through.

What are your “but as for me” moments? The moments when you were at a critical point, but the goodness of God brought you through? Today, as you reflect on those moments, praise God for His goodness, mercy, and grace. Truly, God is good!
