The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot. — Proverbs 10:7
Many years ago, I remember working with my dad and doing various projects around my grandfather’s house. My grandfather had been retired for several years and my dad was his only son. So we often were visiting and helped with different items around his home. I remember doing things like painting, yard work, stacking wood, and many other things.
Not long before my grandfather died, we were at his house and doing another project. This time, we were doing some work with fiberglass near his shed. He wanted to hang some pieces of fiberglass to help protect what he was placing in the open area of the shed. We took sheets of the fiberglass, and with a hammer, we were driving nails to hold them in place.
It wasn’t long after this my grandfather died. After, my grandmother asked if there was anything of his that I wanted. I remember asking for the hammer. Many will say it was an odd request, but for me, that hammer held a lot of memories. For as long as I live, that hammer will be a prized possession.
Life is filled with all sorts of memories. In this verse, we read that the memory of the just is blessed, but the same cannot be said for the wicked. Each of us will leave a memory behind, but will we be remembered for the good or for wickedness?
We all have the ability to control the legacy we leave behind. How we act and the choices we make each day will define how we are remembered once we are gone. If we follow God and live our lives according to His word, we can leave a memory behind that is a blessing. How do you want to be remembered?
Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
