And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD, even burnt offerings morning and evening. — Ezra 3:3
It is often said that when people are afraid, they will do almost anything. I recall hearing this once when someone was on the run after committing a crime. They were certainly going to jail, so they were on the run. Crime after crime was committed in an attempt to escape law enforcement.
But the same is true for people when they are fearful of other things. When someone is fearful of circumstances and situations in life, they will often take on extensive measures in an effort to escape. At times, they may try to escape to their comfort zone. Maybe they want to go to a favorite place or a relaxing spot even.
So how do we respond when fear strikes our lives? Where do we go, and what do we do? Rather than resorting to drastic measures, perhaps we should consider getting back to the foundation. In this verse, that’s what the people did. They went back to the foundations of the altar and sought God once again.
Many people in this world will seek comfort and consolation in many things. They will look for it in substances to help them forget. Others will look for it in people who give horrible advice. Instead, we should get back to the foundation of our Christian faith.
Perhaps you don’t have fear in your life today, but it seems to find us all at some point. How will you respond? Will you run to the pleasures and distractions of this world, or will you get back to the foundation? The best place for us in times of fear is in close proximity to God.
