And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. — Acts 2:42

Whether we like to admit it or not, we are all creatures of habit. I am the first one to admit that about myself. Were it not for my wife, I would probably do many of the same things every day. It is not uncommon for me to eat the same lunch all week. I wear nearly the same clothes every week. When I find something I like, I usually stick with it.

Maybe you are not that habitual, but there’s no doubt you still have certain habits. Maybe you take the same way to work every day. Perhaps you wake up at the same time every day. Do you perhaps fill up at the same gas station every week? Or maybe you even go to the same restaurant for your favorite meal regularly.

Those habits come naturally. We find a way that we like to do something, and it just develops. But that’s also how we were designed by God. We can see that in the different things that God gives us instruction to do regularly. Things like prayer, worship, and reading God’s word.

We may change some things about our habits, perhaps eliminating bad habits. But there are other things that shouldn’t change. In this verse in Acts, we read how the people continued in the things they were taught. They held their doctrine, the importance of fellowship, and prayer.

Have you changed any of those habits in your life? Have you changed your beliefs to fit the convenience of your life? Have you changed your prayer life because you just can’t “find the time” to pray? Have you abandoned your fellowship with other Christians?

We can certainly change our habits. But there are some things that are vitally important to the Christian life. Many times, we refuse to change or change out of convenience. But instead, we should be holding on to certain truths steadfast! We should hold to our faith and doctrine, our prayer lives, and our fellowship with other Christians.

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
