The company we keep

Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties. — Psalm 141:4

I will never forget my dad’s warnings when I was younger. Each time I was about to leave our house, he would often say one simple statement to me: “Remember who you are.” To many around me, they knew me as the pastor’s son. They knew my family and our extended family in the area. I was a representative of our family everywhere we went.

But more than that, each time I left our home, I was a representative of Christ. Those around me knew that I went to church and claimed to be a Christian. Every step I took was being watched, every place I went was being observed, and every word I said was being listened to. Even more, every person I was with was noticed.

Some of my friends were not the best. They were not Christian. Perhaps they didn’t use the best language, have the best actions, or make the best decisions. But because I was with them, I was being associated with those same actions, words, and decisions.

The company we keep can affect our Christian witness in so many ways. David knew that. That’s why he spoke about the wicked works and those who worked iniquity. He knew the importance of not being associated with those who would tear down his reputation as a person of faith and influence him to wickedness and sin.

If someone were to look at the company we keep, what would they think about us? Would they see us as Christians, people of faith, and close followers of God? Those with whom we spend the most time speak volumes about who we are. The company we keep matters, and we should ask God to help us find the right people to spend time with.

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue its work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
