And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. — John 19:39

Easter is always a time of reflection for any Christian. Many will enjoy time out of school, spring break trips, and perhaps spending time with family. But each year as I approach this time of year, I reflect back on the various recording we have of the day. Scripture gives us many different pictures from Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, but there is something special about this verse.

We have three interactions recorded in scripture of Nicodemus. The first is what he is most known for. He came to Jesus in the night. He didn’t want anyone to know that he was going to Jesus. He did it in the secret of darkness. His reputation and his life mattered the most to him.

In the second and third interactions we read about Nicodemus, there is a caveat placed in the scripture. It identifies him as the one who came to Jesus at night. In the second interaction, he was defending Jesus among his own group, the Sanhedrin. The verse above is the third.

There are many things in our lives that have some sort of priority. For some, it is money. For others, it may be reputation. No matter what it is, those things stand in the way of what should be the most important thing to us. If our attention was placed on Jesus, the things of this world no longer matter.

Nicodemus found that. His life was changed by Jesus. He was no longer worried about hiding. He was outspoken, and was found even helping anoint the body of Jesus after His death. But it all came about because Jesus was put into the right perspective.

Where is Jesus in your life? Is He just another story? Maybe you think of Him as a fictional character, just a star of several Christian stories. Jesus is our Savior. He is our risen Lord. When Jesus is in the right place in our lives, our attention turns to serving Him rather than ourselves.

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue its work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
