And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. — Luke 1:38
When I was younger, I really struggled to see how a lot of things mattered. For example, I didn’t always understand why some of my leaders would make certain decisions. It might have inconvenienced me or made my life a little more challenging. Why wouldn’t they make a decision that would benefit me or make things easier?!
As I got older, I started to understand that decisions were not always easy. For example, I remember that soon after I married my wife, I no longer made decisions that mattered just to me. They mattered to her as well. Every single decision affected her in some way. The same goes for my son. Not one decision that I make does not have implications for my family.
No matter the situation in your life, we all face similar consequences of our decisions. Maybe it doesn’t affect your family, friends, or job. But every decision you make is bigger than you because the will of God is at stake. We may not always like where the will of God is leading us, but our response should be “according to your word.”
We don’t read that Mary said, “I can’t do this.” Mary also didn’t say, “I don’t want to do that.” Instead, Mary realized this was bigger than just her. Her being part of the will of God mattered to you and me, even to this day!
Sometimes, the will of God is bigger than you. It may not be easy, it may not be fun, and it may not be where we want to go. But instead of fighting God’s will, our response should be similar to that of Mary when she said, “according to thy word.”
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
