How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land? — Psalm 137:4
There is something special about music. It has the ability to lift up your heart when you are sad. When you find your mind racing or soul searching, sometimes it just takes a song to help you find peace, comfort or a few moments to regroup. But there are times when it may not be the most convenient to break out in a song.
For example, if you are in the middle of a store, there is a good chance you will get some interesting looks. If you were to be walking down the street, chances are someone will think that things have gotten to you. It may be easy to break out in a song when you are at home, but it can be a challenge when you are in a strange place.
Such was the case here in this Psalm. The question is mentioned, “How can we sing a song of praise when we are in a strange place?” They were in a place of discomfort, discouragement, and full of strangers. That certainly sounds like life in a lot of instances.
The Bible tells us that, as Christians, we are strangers in a foreign land. We are not permanent residents of this world. Our home is in Heaven. So we are in a strange land, among strange people. A world that is filled with sin, wickedness, discouragement, and more. It’s filled with places that make it difficult to break out and enjoy a song.
But we can find a song of praise in the middle of a strange place. Not because the circumstances around us change but because of who is in control of those circumstances! Don’t forget that our God is the one in control. He has never failed. He has never left us. Though things may be difficult, keep on singing your song of praise!
