How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! — Proverbs 16:16
Many years ago, I had someone tell me that the smartest thing I could do in my life was to learn as much as I could. They suggested that I not be satisfied with simply knowing a few things, but that I should spend time learning as much as I could about everything. They suggested that I ask questions, surround myself with a variety of people, and learn.
But that certainly differed from the guidance that I received when I started working. I will never forget the day that one of my former bosses told me that I didn’t need to worry about learning all those other things. He said I simply needed to work hard at one thing and worry about making as much money as I could.
As I got older, I quickly realized the importance of learning as much as I could. Not long after my wife and I were married, we bought a house that needed repairs. I was able to do most of the repairs myself, along with the help of some friends. Or the many times I have fixed appliances, cars, furniture, or electronics around our home.
The world will tell us that our focus should be on the gold and silver of this world. They will tell us that nothing else matters except the money. Their idea is that we follow the money and there you will find happiness. But that’s not the case at all.
Real happiness is found in Godly wisdom, like the wisdom that was shared with me about learning all that I could. That advice started with these words, “learn everything that you can about God. Put Him first, and let Him guide you through your life.” We can spend our lives chasing the riches of this world, or we can focus on wisdom and understanding of God.
In seeking Godly wisdom and understanding, you may miss out on the riches of this world. You may never make all the money, drive the fanciest cars, or have the nicest houses. Instead, you’ll find you have treasures in Heaven, the kind that last forever.
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
