When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? — John 5:6
Some time ago, my son was working on a toy that he had. Something was wrong with it, and it was not working quite like it should have. I couldn’t help but laugh. He had his tongue hanging out, and he was focusing with all his might on how to fix that little toy. So I did what most fathers would do, I offered to help.
I was met a strong “No” and then he said the words, “I’ve got it.” As I watched, he continued to struggle with the toy. He was pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, and anything he could think of to get it to work. But nothing he tried seemed to work. Soon, I found the toy dropped in my lap and he said, “Daddy, fix it.”
As Jesus found this man laying by the pool, He knew exactly what He was facing. He knew that this man had been there for many years. Jesus didn’t have to ask the man if he was in trouble or had a problem. He already knew.
Instead, Jesus looks at the man and said, in my words, “Will you let me fix it?” So many times we want to try to hold on to doing things our way. We will try every angle and every way we can think of. Many times, making a bigger mess than we were in to begin with.
Instead, maybe we should learn that little phrase, “Father, will you fix it?” It is not always easy to let go. It is not always easy to trust. But when we do, it allows God to do something in our lives that we are unable to do on our own.
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
