And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. — Luke 12:15

One of the first terms I remember hearing soon after entering the business world was “climbing the corporate ladder.” It is the idea that someone comes into the corporate world and works diligently to be promoted and advance in their career. I was told of the sacrifices of many people who had entered the roles before me and how they were successful.

But the caveat was always given that you had to sacrifice, work hard, and chase money in order to be successful. That is the idea that the world would have us believe that defines success. Because of this, people will spend all their lives chasing money and worldly possessions in order to appear successful or believe they are successful.

Jesus shares in this parable that the things of this world do not define someone’s life. It is not about earning an abundance of money, having possessions beyond measure, or anything that this world would have you believe. All of those things are temporary and will waste away in the end.

As Jesus continues, He shares that the measure of a successful life is the treasure we lay up in Heaven. Throughout our lives, we are placing our treasure somewhere. Either we are setting up temporary treasures here on earth, or eternal treasures in Heaven. In the end, the treasures we lay up in Heaven are all that matter.

If today were your last day on earth, would your life be measured as successful? Not that the world would mourn your loss for great accomplishments or achievements. But will God look at your life and see that you put your treasure in things eternal?

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
