Bridge across the gulf

Bridge across the gulf

And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. — Luke 16:26

Many years ago, I had to travel to Las Vegas for work. I was there to attend several meetings, but I knew I was very close to the Hoover Dam and wanted to see it. So between meetings, a coworker and I set out and drove the short drive to the border and the Hoover Dam.

As we approached the area, we started to see signs about a viewing area. So we quickly followed the signs and made our way up a walkway and found ourselves walking out onto a bridge. Looking down, I was able to see the Hoover Dam. It was a magnificent thing to see, but I was also able to see what is called the Gold Strike Canyon.

This massive bridge was built to cross the Gold Strike Canyon. It gave a way to bypass driving across the Hoover Dam for those who simply wanted to pass by. This massive bridge was built across the gulf between the cliffs so you could safely pass through.

As big as that gulf was, it’s not the largest one in life. Truthfully, the largest gulf that exists in life is the one that Jesus talks about here in Luke 16. He had just finished sharing a story about the rich man and a beggar named Lazarus. One died and went to Heaven, the other to Hell.

Many people in this world joke and say they are on their way to Hell, but that’s no joke. It’s a place of torture and torment forever. But these verses seem to indicate that those in Hell may be able to see a glimpse of what they miss by rejecting Jesus.

But the story doesn’t have to end that way. No one has to find themselves in eternal torment. Thankfully, Jesus gave His life so that we might have a “bridge across the gulf.” If you have accepted Jesus, thank Him today and praise Him that you do not have to go to a place of eternal torment.  But if you haven’t accepted Jesus as Savior, you can today before it is too late!

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
