For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. — Ephesians 2:8-9
Some of the more challenging conversations in my life have always revolved around the concept of why. I remember many conversations with my dad growing up where I had done something I shouldn’t have. He would often look at me and ask me why I did it. Now, as a father, I ask my son the same question.
There were also moments as I went through training to become a paramedic. We would often face situations called “boards” where we had to function in a scenario and then explain why we did what we did. Throughout my career, I have often found myself being asked why or asking the question why of my employees.
The concept of asking someone their why is not new but has a purpose. It helps understand the driver behind the action. It is how we understand the reason and purpose of someone’s decisions. But what would we all say if God were to ask us why we serve Him?
The answers might astound us. For some, they probably believe that living a certain lifestyle will help them get into Heaven. For others, they may live for God because of a parent, spouse, or close friend. But the reason shouldn’t be others around us. The reason should be the free gift God has given to each of us!
We were given the gift of salvation through faith that none of us deserved. We have no reason to boast about anything that we have done. It is all in what God has done. It was a gift, and that gift should be our reason why.
It should be the reason we get up every day. It should be the reason we approach each day, looking for an opportunity to serve God. As you reflect on your life today, what is your why?
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
