Defining people around us

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. — Luke 6:31

When I worked as a paramedic, I saw an interesting side of people. Every day, I went into businesses and homes around the community where I worked, seeing people in various conditions. Some were in nice, multi-million dollar homes. Others were in what amounted to nothing more than a simple shack on the side of the highway. What I always found interesting was how those people were viewed in different different settings.

I walked into many homes where others said they would never want to go. They simply looked at the outside of the house and made the determination the people living inside were not up to a standard. It is interesting how we define people. They are defined by things such as appearance, possessions, or even something as simple as an ID card or registration number.

But that’s not how God expects for us to see those around us. In this verse, we see words that are often quoted by people around us. We often refer to the teaching as the golden rule. Yet, so many times, these words are not lived up to.

We allow our eyes and mind to define those around us, often classifying them in different categories. Upper class, middle class, or lower class. But life is about more than how we define people. It is about how we live our lives as a witness in front of them.

What would happen if we found ourselves in the same position as those around us? Would it change our perception on how they are treated? Any one of us could be in a bad situation in this life. But by the grace of God, we have been blessed. Instead of defining people, our desire should be to live a witness in front of those people, sharing our story of God’s love, mercy, and grace.

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
