Understanding the depths

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. — John 16:12

As I sat and listened, the person simply unloaded their entire perspective to me. They were going through something pretty significant in life, and simply talking about it with someone was relieving. While they saw it as a relief, I saw it as overwhelming! There was so much information to take in that it was almost more than I could bear.

While I tried to take it all in, I simply couldn’t. There were so many details that I would have probably needed hours to comprehend and understand things fully. It made me so glad that we have a God who understands all things. So I could pray for this person while missing many details, knowing that God knew the entire situation and what needed to be done.

Sometime later, I recall reading through John 16. Jesus was sharing how he had so many more details that he wanted to share. He wanted to tell them all the things He could. But Jesus knew that they couldn’t handle it. Many things were preventing them from understanding all the things He wanted to share.

I often wonder how many moments such as this exist in our own lives. How many times does God want to share something with us, but He knows that we can’t handle it? Just as things may have prevented the people that day from understanding the depths, I wonder what might keep us from going into the depths God would like to take us.

God desires us to grow deeper in our relationship with Him. He wants to take us farther, teach us more, and help us experience Him in a greater way. But to do that, we have to be able to handle it. Are our hearts prepared? Are we focused on living our lives so that we can take in all that God would like to show us?

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
