Just doing my duty

Just doing my duty

For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. — Mark 13:34

On many occasions, I have shared my appreciation for the US Military and all that they do. I am proud to live in this great nation, knowing that we have one of the greatest military groups ever assembled to protect us each day. I love getting to see these service men and women in public to thank them for their service.

On one occasion, I recall meeting a young man who was working with the local recruitment office. He had finished his basic training and first tour of duty in the Middle East. When I told him I appreciated what he was doing, his reply was, “Just doing my duty.” He knew that he willingly joined the service and that his duty was to accept the assignments given to him.

Some time passed after this event when I came across this verse in Mark 13 during some reading. Jesus was talking to the disciples, and the words “gave authority to his servants” and “every man his work” caught my attention. I couldn’t help but remember the words of this young man.

As Christians, we willingly accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, placing ourselves into His service. It’s a great honor but also a tremendous duty that we have. We have been charged to live for God, shine our lights, and do His work until Jesus returns again.

But do we have the same attitude as this young man? Do we approach the work of God with the same sense of responsibility as “just doing my duty?” If we are all honest, we are probably all guilty of neglecting our duty or approaching it with reluctance and hesitation occasionally.

The duty that we were given is one of the most important things that we can do in this life. Instead of neglecting it or being reluctant, we should approach it dutifully. Our desire should be to do it to the best of our ability until the day that Jesus comes.

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
