O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever. — Psalm 136:26

It seems that the older I grow in life, the more I look back and reflect on things in my life. I often reflect back on many of the choices that I have made, the things I have said, or the many things I have done. Not all of those things were the right thing. I often said the wrong thing or made the wrong choice.

While my life has been far from perfect, looking back on it helps me understand how I became the person that I am today. It helps me understand where I was before in my life, how things have changed based on the various things in life, and where my life is going because of it.

As I reflect on Psalm 136, I cannot help but see the same thing. The psalmist starts in verse 1 by talking about giving thanks to the Lord because He is good. Then, there is an entire group of verses where the psalmist reflects on everything God has done. As we get to verse 26, it’s almost as if we reach a summary and that because of all those things God has done, we should give thanks to God.

As you look back over your life today, what are you thankful for? Amid all the good decisions, bad decisions, the ups and downs, God has been there. You can look back, and no doubt see the work of God in your life, shaping you to be the person that you are today.

If you were to write your list of all the things in your past that God has done for you, what would be on the list? If we are all honest, God has been far better to each of us than we deserve. Today, reflect on the things that God has done. Remember how good He has been to you and above all, give Him thanks!

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
