Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. — 1 John 4:10

I have always loved a good mystery. When I was younger, I used to read mystery novels. The story would captivate me as I did my best to try and figure out what was happening in the story before it got to the very end. I was not always right in my assumptions, but it always kept me guessing about the mystery.

It has continued on to my adult life as well. When I am working on something, I love a challenge. I love something that may be difficult for others to figure out. Often, I’ll take that as a challenge and work on trying to solve what is a mystery to those around me.

While I often figure out the mysteries that I am working on, there are many that I cannot figure out. Perhaps my understanding is limited. Maybe the problem is so complex that I cannot follow it through. Whatever the situation may be, something prevents me from solving the mystery. It can be frustrating to someone like me who loves to solve a mystery.

But there is one mystery I have given up on trying to solve. It’s found here in 1 John and all throughout the scripture in the words, “he loved us.” I have tried thousands of ways to understand why God would love me. But there is no justification to explain why He does!

If we are all honest, the love of God for us is the greatest mystery of all. Why would He love us and send His son to die in our place? Why would He love us, as vile and wretched as we can be? But He does!

Today, take a moment to reflect on the love of God for you. Don’t try to solve the mystery of why He loves you because it is impossible. Instead, take a moment to thank Him and praise Him. While we may never understand it, we can all be thankful for God’s amazing love for us!

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
