Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. — Psalm 103:2

Not long after my son started learning to talk, we started working on proper manners. It was important that he learn to interact with others. So we started teaching him the word “please.” One of the next things that we taught him to say was “Thank you.” We wanted him to know how to properly ask for things, but also to show his appreciation.

He quickly learned how to say the words to those he interacted with. But sometimes, he was distracted by whatever he received. Maybe it was his favorite snack, or he was very hungry and wanted to eat as quickly as possible. He was more focused on what he was given than saying thank you. That’s when we would often remind him, “What do you say?” He quickly remembered to say thank you.

As Christians, we are often easily distracted as well. We often get distracted by the circumstances of life, and we often overlook the everyday things we receive from God. It is almost like we have become accustomed to God working in our lives that we forget to say thank you.

In reading the words of this Psalm, I was reminded of the words I often say to my son. God has been far better to each of us than we deserve. In just the act of giving His son for our sins, we were given more than we ever deserved.

But He doesn’t stop there. Each and every day, we receive the benefits of being a child of God. He has mercy and grace on our lives. He cares for us, provides for us, and loves us more than we can ever fathom. But so many times, we forget to just say thank you.

Today, take a moment and reflect on all the goodness of God in your life. Think about all the benefits you receive that are far beyond anything you deserve. When you do, I don’t think we will have any difficulty in saying thank you to our Lord!

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
