But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. — Matthew 14:30
Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I am easily distracted. There are so many times that it only takes a slight noise or movement to completely derail my thoughts during a conversation. So many times, I stand in front of crowds talking or presenting. Let someone cough, sneeze, or stand up to go to the restroom, and I can easily lose focus.
There are always instances in life that can cause us to lose focus. Yours may differ from mine, but if we are all honest, there are things that cause us to lose focus. It could be social media. Maybe it’s a good book. Or perhaps it’s the daily struggles of life. But how we respond in those moments is what matters.
I love these verses in Matthew where the disciples were on the boats crossing the sea at Jesus’ command. We find that the winds picked up around them, and the seas became rocky. That wasn’t uncommon. In fact, the Bible mentions nothing about them panicking in the ship. Peter even got out of the ship to walk to Jesus.
But he lost his focus. He started to focus on the issues around him. He saw the waves. Peter felt the wind. He lost his focus on the one who was in control of the wind and sea.
The winds and storms around our lives may rage, but we have to keep our focus on the one who is in control of it all. When you start losing your focus, it only amplifies your situation. Peter was doing just fine until he lost his focus. It was at that moment he started to become overwhelmed.
Whatever is going on in life today, keep your focus on the one in control. The things around you may want to take your attention away from God. But don’t lose focus on Him!
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
