Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word. — Psalm 119:114
There is something reassuring about knowing you are safe. For example, there is something special about the moments when you are traveling down the road, and you come up to your home. You know that while all the troubles and cares of the world still exist, you get some safety by being in your home. You know what to expect when you are in your home.
But even though you may be in your home, it doesn’t mean that you feel 100% safe. Most of us have door locks on our doors. Many people have alarms in their homes. You may even have cameras where you can watch what is happening in and around your house as well. Would we really go to that extreme if we felt 100% safe? Probably not.
But in the words of the psalmist here, it isn’t the idea of partial safety or security. In the words of “hiding place” we find the concept of being completely hidden in God. Nothing can get to us without going through God first. But the psalmist takes it one step further.
Not only are we hidden by God, but we are protected by Him. So, if we think about those words in the literal sense, God has us hidden, then covered with His shield. I would call that the ultimate security package! But it wasn’t a literal hiding place and a shied that gave such a sense of security. It was simply trusting in the word of God.
So many times, we find ourselves worrying about things. We are fearful of the “what-ifs” in life. But God didn’t promise to just take care of us and protect us in those extreme situations. His words were that He would never leave us or forsake us.
We have the ultimate security package in God. So why do we worry and fear over the things of this life? We have the promises of God, given in His word. Instead of worry and fear, our focus should be on faith.
Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
