Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies. — Psalm 108:13
There are so many times in my life when I have looked at various scripture for strength. I think of popular verses like Philippians 4:13, where we are reminded that anything is possible through Christ. Or perhaps Deuteronomy 31:6, where we are reminded that God is with us anywhere we go. But have you ever looked at Psalm 108:13?
If you are like me, it wasn’t one of the first verses that came to mind. In fact, it wasn’t in my top 10, 20, or even on my radar. But there is an amazing truth found in this verse. David says, “Through God we shall do valiantly.” I added the bold and italics so we don’t miss the key to this verse. We shall do valiantly.
The definition of the word valiantly is to do something with courage or determination. But I’m interested in the original Hebrew word that was used here chayil. As you study the word, it has the meaning of a force. In other words, we can be courageous and determined, even when facing our enemies, because we have a force on our side.
But the idea behind the word goes even further. It’s more than just a force, it’s a force that has a specific effect on anything in its path. It leaves them in distress, in travail, shaken, and trembling. That’s not just getting by, that’s a dominating force. A force of victory to overcome anything in our way.
There are things that we may face in this life that try to discourage us and get us down. But we need to remember the force that is with us! It is not just a force of survival. This is a force of victory in any situation! There is nothing that can come against us in this life that will win.
What is happening in your life that has you down? Are there circumstances that seem too difficult to overcome? Maybe the burden seems like it is too great and you will fall. Just remember who is on your side! With God, you shall do valiantly! A force is with you and there is nothing in this world that can stop Him!
