For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. — 1 Thessalonians 4:7

Many years ago, I was having a conversation with someone about life and about their future. This individual was a student who was thinking about their future and what they wanted to do with their life. As they were talking, they said something that caught my attention. Amid all the dozens of opportunities that were before them, they wanted to choose something for their life that gave them purpose.

That certainly is the mindset of the overall society of late. People want a purpose behind the things they do. They want a reason to wake up and get out of bed each morning. They want to be fulfilled and find purpose in the work that they do each day. In fact, a 2021 survey showed that 75% of millennials felt they lacked purpose in life.

But there is no doubt that our life has a real purpose. In fact, a lot of people overlook that very aspect of this verse in 1 Thessalonians. Many will simply read this verse of scripture and talk about the surface of what Paul writes about. It absolutely means that God has not called us to a life of sin and uncleanness. But he continues on to say we are called to holiness.

This word holiness in the original text was hagiasmos. This means not only a life that is pure but a life that is consecrated. In other words, a life set apart in service to God. A life dedicated to a divine purpose.

The world will tell you to look all over for a life that is fulfilling of your fleshly desires and wants. But we are called to live in holiness, having a divine purpose placed on our lives by God. Do we live our lives to satisfy ourselves, or do we live our lives with a divine purpose for God? God doesn’t want what is left over after your own personal satisfaction. He wants all of your life lived with purpose for Him!
