As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. — Psalm 125:2

I will never forget one night when I was working as a paramedic. We were in an area of town that was not the safest area to be in attempting to help someone having a medical emergency. While we were there, I had this eerie feeling we were being watched. All around us were shadows, so it was essentially impossible to see what could possibly be there.

It wasn’t uncommon for law enforcement to join us for these calls at this time of night due to the location. I remember looking at one of the officers and saying, “I feel like we are being watched.” He started looking around and sure enough, lurking in the shadows was someone watching our every move.

Nothing happened to us or the patient who we were helping that night. But it was certainly an eye-opening experience. Not just for the situation of having someone watching us from the shadows, but in realizing that evil is all around us, looking for an opportunity to strike.

Could you imagine if the story stopped there? What if the story ended that we were surrounded by evil, lurking and looking for a place to strike us when we least expect it? I’m so glad it doesn’t! I’m so glad the Bible reminds us that we are not alone, that God is watching over us, surrounding us, and protecting us.

There are many times in life when we may recognize evil and be able to stay away. At other times, it may be lurking for an opportunity to strike. Thankfully, God is watching over us and protecting us! It often leads me to think how much evil He has protected me from, without me ever knowing it!

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide.
