Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. — 2 Corinthians 3:17

There is no doubt in my mind that the United States of America is the greatest nation to have ever existed up to this point. From coast to coast and border to border, our nation has been blessed with some of the most beautiful things that God ever created. But that is not what makes our nation so great.

We could continue to look at all the things that have come out of our nation that have revolutionized our world. We were pioneers in air travel, technology, vehicles, and so much more. Even as these things continue to change and evolve, you can still see many of these foundational developments that were made right here in the United States in use today. But that is not what makes our nation so great.

In fact, there are many that would argue our nation is not so great after all. They want to use political overtures to indicate that our nation is a horrible place to be because of their desire to live sinful lifestyles. But not a single one of these things makes our nation great, or horrible.

What made America the great nation that it is was that it has been blessed with the spirit of God. Because truly freedom cannot exist apart from God. Our founding fathers knew this as they set forth to establish our great nation. It was in their words and showed in their actions. They weren’t perfect, but they knew where true freedom came from.

Samuel Adams once said, “I rely upon the merits of Jesus Christ to pardon all of my sins.” Dr Benjamin Rush, another signer of the Declaration said, “my only hope of salvation is in the infinite, transcendent love of God manifested to the world by the death of His Son upon the cross.” John Witherspoon, another signer, said, “There is no salvation in any other than in Jesus Christ of Nazareth.”

Perhaps Charles Carroll, the last living signer of the Declaration said it best. In reflecting on America’s independence, he said, “Grateful to Almighty God for the blessings which, through Jesus Christ Our Lord, He had conferred on my beloved country in her emancipation and on myself in permitting me, under circumstances of mercy, to live to the age of 89 years, and to survive the fiftieth year of independence, adopted by Congress on the 4th of July 1776.”

God has richly blessed our nation. Through the mercy and grace of God, we were given freedom. We should all be grateful, as Carroll was, for being blessed to live in the United States of America.

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
