Before the action

But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. — Psalm 13:5

On many occasions, I have had the opportunity to participate in an event where something was given to someone else. Perhaps it was supporting a charity with a financial donation, or even something as small as giving an underprivileged person or child a gift. In many of these situations, I recall the sincere appreciation that the person showed for what they received.

One specific occasion involved a young child who was given a gift that they had really wanted. Their family was unable to provide much for the child and we knew that. So we raised some money and we were able to get the child that special gift, along with many other things that were truly needed. I remember the tears of joy that the family cried and their appreciation.

On each of these occasions, appreciation came after the act. After the gift was given, they expressed appreciation. But that’s not what David means here when he says his heart will rejoice. David said he had trusted in God’s mercy, and then was indicating he was going to rejoice now, for what God would do in the future.

David didn’t have a guarantee of what God was going to do. But he had enough faith that God could deliver him. Instead of being miserable or depressed over what he faced, David chose to praise God for what he believed God would do.

It can be so easy to focus on our troubles and trials of life. So many times we focus on our problems, becoming miserable and depressed. Instead, we should praise God before the action. We should trust that He will do something. It isn’t a guarantee that He will. But He is more than able and it shows God that we have complete faith in Him.

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
