And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. — Acts 26:24

At some point in our lives, we have all heard comments about someone being crazy. Perhaps someone said it about you, saying that you were crazy for something you did. While there are many times it is jokingly said about someone for doing something odd, there are many times it is said about someone with passion.

For example, I remember attending a baseball game one time. I recall seeing someone yelling emphatically at the players, coaches, and the umpires. They would shout at the top of their lungs each inning as the game progressed. The person who was at the game with me turned and said those words, “I think they are crazy.”

It certainly wasn’t that the person was necessarily crazy, but they were passionate. They believed in their team and were cheering for them with all their might. They were constantly talking about them and it was clear whose side they were on. Everyone knew who their team was!

As I think about Festus’ statement back to Paul here, in my words he is saying the same thing, “Paul you are crazy!” But Paul was far from crazy. He was committed fully to God. Each word out of his mouth was pointing others to God. There was no doubt among anyone who was listening that day whose side Paul was on.

Are we that passionate about God? As the people around us hear us talk, do they think we are crazy for how passionate we are about our Heavenly Father and our love for Him? If we were as passionate about God as we should be, no doubt many people would think we were all crazy.

But that’s truly how passionate we should be. There should be no doubt whose side we are on. There should be no doubt about the God who we serve and our love for Him. It’s okay to be passionate about God and let it show. Go ahead, let them think you are crazy.
