Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. — Ecclesiastes 2:11
One of my favorite things to do is to find something that is broken and try to fix it. I remember when I was much younger, I started trying to fix broken things around my parent’s home. Soon after, my wife and I got married and I continued to do the same thing.
If the vacuum was broken, I wanted to try and fix it. I would tear it apart and see if there was a way I could repair it. An ice maker wasn’t working? I would try to fix it. Maybe it was a lamp, a fan, a television, or one of dozens of other things. I truly believed I could figure out what was wrong and repair it.
As I got older, I started trying to ask myself a question before I started trying to fix something. Is it worth all the work? For example, was it worth spending hours attempting to repair a fan? Many times I would spend hours working on something that I determined was not able to be repaired. I could have simply bought a new one and moved on.
As we go through our lives, we are all doing things every day that we should ask ourselves, “Is it worth all the work?” Is it worth working hard to try and be popular in society? Climbing the corporate ladder or even seeking all the knowledge this world has to offer? It isn’t worth it if those things don’t bring honor to God!
The things of this life are temporary. All the wealth and fame of this world will never satisfy your soul or be profitable to you. But doing the work of God, focusing on things that are eternal will. Look at all the things in your life. Are they vanity or are they eternal? God gives us the choice of what we focus our attention on, and it should be on the eternal!
