According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. — Philippians 1:20
As the conversation continued, I was just trying to follow along. This person had been sharing a story with me for about 20 minutes without so much as taking a break. They were animated and sharing with all their heart. That’s when I asked the question, “So what’s the big deal?”
They could not believe that I didn’t understand what the big deal was. After all, they had just spent 20 minutes explaining it to me in great detail. Unfortunately, I didn’t understand. I explained to them that I felt their passion and appreciated their earnest pleas. To this person, it was a very big deal!
As I think about Paul’s statements here in Philippians, I can’t help but imagine that Paul was probably sharing his words with the same passion. He wanted the church to know that above all else, the expectation and hope was that Christ would be magnified, whether through life or death. In other words, it was all about Jesus!
Our desire should be the same. We should want to live our lives with such a passion for Jesus that we simply can’t stop talking about Him. Our hope should be that others would think of our passion for Jesus as I did this person, and want to ask us “What’s the big deal?”
As you go about your day today, keep this thought in mind. Does my life show how important Jesus really is to me? In all that we do, we should live our lives unashamed, attempting to magnify our Savior. Because He is a big deal!
