I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. — Psalm 4:8
Not long after moving into a new house, we had a startling night. In the early hours of the morning, someone rang our doorbell. By the time I realized what was happening, they had walked away. About 5 minutes later, they came back and rang it again. After talking to the person through our video doorbell, they stated they needed some help.
We called to get them some help, but given the state of our world, we didn’t open the door. We weren’t sure it was safe! After the help arrived for the person, I laid back down in the bed and attempted to go to sleep. I had been awake for just over an hour in the middle of the night and knew the day was quickly approaching.
Each time I got comfortable and started to go to sleep, I would wake again. Hearing the doorbell startled me. For those moments, I was concerned about the safety of my family. I was restless, and could not get comfortable. For those moments, I didn’t have peace.
I remember praying as I lay in the bed. I thanked God for His protection over me and my family. My prayer continued thanking God for His faithfulness each time we needed Him. But I was reminded of the words of this Psalm. My night was interrupted and prayed that God would give me peace so I could lay down and sleep. I knew I was safe in the Lord.
There are many circumstances in life that will try to interrupt our peace and eliminate our safety. Many times in my life I have found myself in the middle of a sleepless night over circumstances of life. But each time I asked God to help with peace and safety, He has been faithful!
Do you ever find yourself in circumstances where you don’t have the peace to sleep? Or maybe there are times that you don’t feel safe. I’m so glad God is able to give both peace and safety, so we can find rest! No matter what may be going on in the world around us and no matter what may come upon our lives, God is an expert in providing peace and safety.
Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
