And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. — 1 Samuel 17:39
On a few occasions in my life, I have had the opportunity to go camping. On some occasions when I was younger, my friends and I would plan a night of camping outside another’s home. We would make a list of those we wanted to invite and soon, we were deep in preparation.
We needed firewood and we needed food. We needed things to do to pass the time. Someone needed to bring flashlights while another needed to bring drinks for us all. We were young and my friend’s parents would not be far away in their house. But we were determined to make it through the night without needing their help.
While our camping adventures are significantly different than the struggles of life, they required preparation nonetheless. I love the story of David here in 1 Samuel where Saul was attempting to help David prepare to battle Goliath. He gave David his armor to help David prepare to face this giant.
There was just one problem, David had never used this armor. It had never been proven. David knew in his heart that he didn’t need the armor. Why? Because David had relied upon God before. God had helped him battle the lion and the bear while protecting the sheep. David knew that all he needed was God.
No matter what life may bring our way, our preparation list only needs to consist of one thing: God. Whether we are facing life’s lions, bears, or giants, God has been faithful each time and will be faithful again. Don’t waste your time using this world’s preparation books, prepare by trusting God!
Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
