Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. — Psalm 23:4

It was a rather bright and sunny day in western North Carolina. I remember looking out the window and seeing the puffy white clouds streaming by in the distance over the mountaintops. I continued to watch the clouds pass as I pondered several things, then suddenly, it was like someone had turned the lights off.

It became a lot darker outside the window. I looked up and I realized that one of those big clouds had passed right over me. As I looked around, I noticed something in the distance that really caught my attention. It seemed much darker in the area around me, but the sun was still shining on the mountain in the distance.

I looked around and saw cars driving down the road, they were in the sunlight. Trees nearby were in the sun as well. But as for me, I was in the shadow. There are many times in life that’s how it seems. Things seem to be going well, then suddenly, you find yourself in a dark place. A place of danger, darkness, or distress.

When you find yourself in those places of darkness, it can be easy to forget the things around you. It can be easy to become fearful of what that darkness may bring. At times, we even seem to forget that God is our comforter and Shepherd.

But praise God the darkness and the shadows are not forever! We will all find ourselves in those periods of darkness. But all around us, the light is still shining. God is still in control and He knows exactly what we are facing. Don’t lose your focus in the darkness. The dark times are going to come, but they will not last forever. God has it all under control.
