The danger of looking back

The danger of looking back
Share with others

And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed…But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. — Genesis 19:17 & 26

Old habits can be hard to break. Ask anyone who has come out of a life consumed by things of this world, and they will tell you it’s difficult. That’s why alcoholics and drug addicts are at such a high risk of falling back into the same lifestyle.

When we talk about “falling back into the same thing,” that’s where our mind almost immediately goes. We immediately think about the catchy words and things that happen in our society. That’s how the world has conditioned our minds. But this is more than just catchy words or a drug problem.

In the example of Lot’s wife, we see there was a warning not to look back at Sodom and Gomorrah. But she did. She couldn’t let go of the things in her past. While the world would try to say she should seek her own happiness and satisfaction, the truth is her sin nature was craving the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Every Christian can fall into the same temptation. We live in a world full of sin. Sin that the world tells you will satisfy you. But it doesn’t. Sin can never satisfy, but the world tells us it will. So the temptation is there to look back on sin and to fall back into the same things again.

It can be so easy to fall back into the ways of sin. It’s a danger we must be aware of. But we must remain focused on God. The sins of our past can haunt us forever but don’t look back at your past. You are forgiven, and your sins are gone forever. Keep your eyes on God and focus on living for Him!

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
