So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. — Matthew 27:66
Not so long ago, I remember that my son was doing something he shouldn’t be doing at our house. I had told him that he needed to stop several times, but he has quite a stubborn streak at times. He continued to do what he was doing. Finally, the point came where I had to make him stop.
I remember that I stood up, and it was more than me just saying to stop. I took action. The item that was in his hands, I took it away. He was no longer able to do what he was doing. The risk of hurting himself, one of our pets, or anyone else was eliminated. To make certain it didn’t happen again, I sat down right beside him and watched him like a hawk.
Of course, the story of our Savior’s death is much different than that of my son. But I can only imagine that the chief priests and Pharisees felt the same way. They wanted to make sure that there was no way possible for Jesus to resurrect as He said. They didn’t want His body stolen, and they sealed the stone and set a watch over the tomb.
There was just one problem with the plan. While they mocked Jesus, scourged Him, and put Him to death, they failed to recognize who He truly was. The least of their concern was theft by the disciples. They underestimated the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Nothing in this world could stop Jesus’ resurrection.
Today, as we celebrate and reflect on what Jesus did for us on the cross, keep this in mind. Nothing can stop Him. Sin could not stop Him. He conquered it. Death could not stop Him, He resurrected and is alive forever more. If you believe in Him, you believe that to be true.
So why do we doubt His ability to handle the things we face in our life? There is not one thing that has ever stopped God in His work. Nothing can stop Him! Not even the situations you face in your life can prevent Him from overcoming!
