He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. — Psalm 23:2
Growing up in North Carolina, I remember visiting all the different areas around the mountains. On one occasion, I went with some friends from church to a local stream. We were near the base of the mountain, where the water was crystal clear and cool. We set out to enjoy an afternoon of trout fishing, something that the area was well known for.
We all put on our gear, and we waded out into the water. It was a hot day, but the water was nice and cool. It was so refreshing. As we started making our way up the stream, we went through an area where the water was not as deep. There were a lot of rocks, and it caused the water to have a rapids-type effect.
It got increasingly difficult to stand due to the water crashing over the rocks, and soon, I found myself falling into the water. I struggled to get up as the water crashed around me. After my friends helped me up, they led me around the area a different way, where the water was much calmer.
It was the exact same stream, the one that took me down with its current. But here, because the water was deeper, the current was easier to handle. I was able to stand, all because the water was calm. Once again, I was able to enjoy the refreshing, cool waters on a hot day.
There are many times in life the challenges we face may look small. We may not think much about them, but then suddenly, we find ourselves knocked down and in trouble. But I’m so thankful for our Shepherd, who watches over us and helps us in those moments. He helps guide us to a place of still waters.
Have you been knocked down by things of this world? Do you find yourself struggling to stand amid the challenges you face? God is able to help you navigate through these situations and guide you to still waters once again. Just trust Him and rely on Him. He will see you through.
