When I was still in my paramedic training many years ago, I will never forget one of the first calls that I ever ran. We responded to a house where a woman said she was hurt by someone in the home. Law enforcement was at the home and we entered to care for the woman. As law enforcement continued to investigate, the person accused of hurting her became angry.
I remember this person saying, “I’m a Christian. I would never do this to her.” The tension continued to mount, and the person became angry. I remember they threw something and started to become violent in their rage. In just a few moments, law enforcement secured the individual so we were all safe and could continue to care for the patient.
Some of us may struggle with anger more than others, but we are all human. We all may face times when we deal with anger and frustration. But there is a clear difference between being upset and being angry. Being upset may cause us to act or change things, but anger may cause violence and, in the end, hurt someone or even our reputation!
We have to realize that anger is an emotion that we all struggle with. Even some of our “heroes” in the Bible struggled with anger. The Bible cautions us to be slow to anger. But it never says we cannot be upset or frustrated.
When we find ourselves struggling with anger, there are things we can do. We can seek guidance found in God’s word. The entire book is filled with examples and knowledge to help us through life. We can also ask for help from God in prayer. The lessons may be tough, but the Bible reminds us if we ask, He is faithful. Rather than being angry, we should ask God to work through us so that our light may shine and show there’s a difference in us.
