Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds. — Colossians 3:9

One of the most frustrating things in life is dealing with a liar. Especially one who has a continuously changing story. There was a quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln that said something along the lines of, “if you are to be a liar, you must have a good memory.” Of course, Mark Twain was also credited with saying, “if you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”

Dealing with lies is frustrating. It eliminates the trust that you have in someone. Even just the smallest of lies have repercussions beyond imagination. What often starts as a “white lie” ends up being an extraordinary tale. While we may expect lies from some people, we wouldn’t expect them from fellow believers.

But that’s exactly what we deal with from time to time. We may have close friends, family, church family, and other Christians around us that may lie to us. To me, those lies hurt the most. These are the ones that we should be able to trust and rely on the most in life.

The Bible shares many passages about lying. In Proverbs, we read that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord. It says that those who deal in truth are a delight to God. Here in Colossians, there is a specific warning about lying. Paul writes that they should not lie to one another. Why? Because they are different now!

As Christians, we are no longer who we used to be. We accepted Christ as Savior, and a change takes place in our lives. One of those changes is in how we deal with others. Our lips should be honest and straightforward. That’s what pleases God and what our fellow Christians should expect. As you reflect today, are you telling the truth to those around you, or are you guilty of lying?

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
