And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. — 1 Samuel 1:15

There are many times in life when those around you may look at you and think that you are crazy! I have read the stories of countless entrepreneurs and inventors who were considered crazy in their time. They had a passion and a desire that no one around them understood. They simply would not give up on chasing their dreams.

Such is the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel. Hannah desired to have a child but was unable to do so. Throughout the first verses of the story, we are told of how this affected her. She was provoked by those around her for not having a child. She cried and was sorrowful we are told. It was a strong desire of her heart and yet she couldn’t understand why she was unable to have a child.

There are times in life when we may find ourselves with a desire in our hearts that bring us distress. For some, it’s the desire to have a child. Maybe it’s the desire to have a specific type of job, circumstance, or many other situations.

Desire is not necessarily a sin in its own place. It’s not uncommon to have desires in this life, but they must be filtered through the will of God. How do we do that? By following the example of Hannah here. She poured out her soul before God.

Have you shared the desires of your heart with God? Have you been serious in sharing your feelings and circumstances with Him? God can, and many times will, grant us the desires of our hearts if they align with His will. Sometimes, He just wants to see our faith in taking those desires to Him.
