And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. — Genesis 3:9-10
I would imagine that everyone reading this is familiar with the game hide and seek. It’s a game that we commonly play as kids growing up where someone hides and another will go looking for them. For a child, it is an exciting game trying to remain hidden.
I remember when my son learned how to hide and wait to be found. One of his favorite things to do is to hide from you and attempt to scare you when you find him. The challenge is when he tries to hide at times my wife and I do not want him to. For example, he will often hide when he is supposed to be doing something or perhaps when he has done something he knows he shouldn’t have.
While the game of hiding may often happen with kids, it isn’t all that uncommon for us as adults either. Take the situation with Adam and Eve as an example. They did something they knew they shouldn’t do. Their solution? Hide from God.
In our human minds, we believe that we can simply hide from God and avoid the consequences of our actions. Maybe we believe we can hide from our sin. For others, perhaps it is disobedience. The truth is, we can never hide from God.
As you reflect today, are you trying to hide from God? Is God looking for you for a specific purpose and plan, but you have chosen to hide because you are ashamed or afraid? Rather than hiding, be honest and give yourself to God. He has a purpose and plan for you, but you will never fulfill that purpose in hiding.
