Across the United States, people are celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday today. The idea came about soon after the founding of our nation at the suggestion of President George Washington. Although he suggested a day set aside for Thanksgiving, it was nearly 80 years until it was established as a national holiday. For many, it’s a day of large meals, football, and time to spend with family, but it wasn’t meant that way.
Throughout his proclamation, Washington shared time and again that it was a day set aside to be thankful to God for His providence, mercy, care, and compassion on the people of the United States. He spoke of God’s goodness, grace, and how God allowed the people to establish this great nation. All are words that seem to have disappeared from our nation who continues to move away from acknowledging God in any way.
While those around us may want to move away from acknowledging God and being thankful for His goodness, it is vitally important that we as Christians are thankful. Throughout the scripture, we are told to be thankful. But it’s so much more than simply being thankful one day per year.
As a nation, God continues to bless us even though we have moved far away from the nation we once were. As a Christian, God has continued to provide time and again to us all. Every day, God sends mercy and goodness into our lives that we do not deserve.
Truly God has been good to us all in so many ways. Simply being thankful one day is nowhere near enough for all that God has done for us. So while we set aside specific time to be thankful today, remember to be thankful every day. Because God deserves so much more than just one day for all He has done for us.
