I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. — John 15:5
Not long after my wife and I bought our first house, my grandparents stopped by to visit one day. They wanted to see our house and see us as it had been a while since we had been together. After looking at the house, and walking around outside, my grandfather asked me an interesting question. He said, Can I take a few of those seedlings?
We had a particular tree on the corner of the house and some seedlings has sprouted underneath. He proceeded to share with me that this particular tree had difficulty growing without a larger tree nearby. It seemed that they became stronger being near the one that gave them life. There was a connection between them and being able to live. So he gathered several of them and took them home.
Many years later as I reflect on that conversation, I see an amazing picture of Jesus in that very situation. Jesus taught in John 15 that He was the vine. He was the one that gave life to those around Him. Not only that, but He also shared that He was the source of anything. He said that nothing could be done apart from Him.
Our lives were created to bring forth fruit for God. We were created to praise Him, worship Him, and tell others about Him. Yet, so many people attempt to go about their lives without Him. We cannot produce fruit as we were designed to do if we are not connected to God.
If you look at your life, are you growing and producing fruit? Are you plugged into the true vine, living your life connected to God? Trying to live apart from God is not truly living at all. We must be connected to the one who gives us life to truly live and produce fruit.
