And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10:41-42
Over the past few years, I hear a lot more people talking about the “things that really matter.” When you hear them describe those things, they talk about family, friends, or other things in life. They often refer to the things that are neglected as we go about our busy lives.
It is true that we can often forget about the little things in life as busy as we are. The demands on our time seem to continue to grow every day. As adults, many are going to and from demanding jobs. Even at home, the things that need to be done around the house never seem to be complete. Our kids have programs and events that they attend that demand more of our time.
We certainly see this in the scripture of Luke 10. Martha was going about the house worrying about all the things that needed to be done. She was busy entertaining, but was concerned because Mary was not focused on all the things that needed to be done. Jesus gave a reminder to Martha about the little things that matter.
As we hear those conversations about the little things that matter, there seems to be something often left out. Amid the talk about family, friends, and all the little things, there seems to be little focus on spending more time with God. That’s not so much of a small thing to overlook!
All of the things we often want to focus on are important. We must prioritize family, friends, and all the little things we often talk about. But above all, we must prioritize our personal relationship with God. Amid all the craziness of life, don’t lose sight of what really matters. Most importantly, we must prioritize our relationship with God.
