For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. — 1 Peter 2:21
I remember as a child wanting to be just like my dad. I remember watching him do things and imitating him around the house. I would pretend to talk like him and act like him. I even remember times being around him and watching him walk. I would try to put my steps where his steps were.
Now, I see my son doing similar things. He likes when our clothes look similar. He imitates me as I do things around the house. It was not so long ago we were walking outside and I noticed that I was leaving footprints as I walked. He quickly started jumping step to step. He was trusting in the example I left and trying to be just like me.
Just as I did, my son is learning things every day by the example that I live before him. There’s something to be said about a good example. While I know that anyone is far from perfect, the desire of all our hearts should be to leave an example for those around us. Not that they be just like us, but that we lead them in the right direction.
Jesus gave us the perfect example to live by. He withstood trials and temptation. He dealt with the same emotions that we do. Yet, He still lived a sinless life and left the ultimate example for us all. But are we following that example? Are we following in the footsteps of Jesus, so that others will see that example and want to follow in those same footsteps?
Our steps in following Jesus should be just like the actions of my son. We should be purposeful in our steps, doing all that we can to follow His example as closely as possible. People around us are watching every step we take. Where are our steps leading them?
