I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. — John 14:18
There are a few times in my life that I can honestly say that I felt like I was all by myself. I remember once when I was younger and I started a new school. I knew no one at the school and when I walked in, I felt like I was there all by myself. Even though there were hundreds of people around, I felt alone. I had similar feelings in my first college classes.
There have been other times in my life as well. Times when I have faced circumstances and difficulties in my life where I felt like no one else knew what was going on. Many times, that was truly the case. There was something that I was dealing with and facing that no one else knew about. I mulled the situation over in my mind and was convinced that I was alone.
In John 14, Jesus made a promise to the people that there would be another Comforter that would come. He was referencing the Holy Spirit. He made the promise that not only would this Comforter come, but that He would be a comfort to us forever.
The word “comfortless” in verse 18 is the idea of being abandoned or orphaned. It’s certainly easy to allow our minds to cause us to think we are abandoned. When our minds become fixed on our problems and circumstances, it can be easy to forget the comfort that was promised to us!
Take courage as you go through this life, you are not alone! You are never abandoned with God! Out of love, a Comforter was sent so that we would not have to face all the circumstances and trials of life alone. If you find yourself feeling abandoned, take it to God in prayer. Our Comforter will draw close to you and help you.
