Facing life and death decisions

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. — James 1:5

Several weeks ago, I was made aware of a situation in which a young pastor was fighting for his life. The doctors had said that there was little to be done and his wife was forced to make a decision. It was a life-and-death decision that would determine her husband’s life.

As she went through the circumstance, I saw her post on social media asking for prayer. She shared her heart that she wanted God to give her guidance to make the right decision. Right up until the last moment, she was leaning on God for guidance. In her circumstance, the doctors said that her husband was dead. She trusted God and even after weeks, he’s still alive and going through treatments.

Life and death decisions are never easy, but they are decisions that we will all face in life. Hebrews 9:27 tells us that it is appointed unto man once to die. Apart from the return of our Savior, we will all face life and death decisions. So how do we cope?

In James, he writes very early that if anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask of God. When we face situations in life, like life and death decisions, those are the times when we feel the need for heavenly wisdom more than others. One writer put it like this, “the particular kind of wisdom that we need in trials is to enable us to understand their design, how to respond, and how we may grow out of them.”

When we face these difficult decisions, we must take them directly to God. Be specific with God, tell Him exactly what you are facing and what you need. Thankfully, our God is not a God who wants to see us suffer. Instead, God wants to help if we will ask.
