Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  — John 8:12

Throughout the Bible, we often read of the example of light and dark. Light is often related to the things of God while darkness is related to sin. The concept of light and dark is founded in Genesis when God created the world and established day and night. He established the sun to rule by day and darkness to exist at night. Even with darkness existing, He still created the mood to give lesser light at night.

The overall concept is a rather elementary illustration of how light and dark work. Darkness exists only based on the amount of light present. We see some darkness at night because the moon is not a bright light. Yet, in the daytime, the sun is present and we see very little, if any, darkness when the sun is in view. The same goes for our homes. Darkness exists until we turn on the light.

Jesus was teaching here and shared that he is the light of the world. He shared that those who follow Him shouldn’t walk in darkness, but instead light. In other words, you will have little desire to live a life of sin if you are following closely the light of the Savior.

The key is how bright that light is and if it is in its right place. The brightness of the sun doesn’t fade during the night. The sun is simply not in the place to give light. Even if the sun is out, it can be hidden by clouds. It’s position is blocked and prevents it from being the light it could be.

Just as important as it is for the physical sun to be in its correct place, we must also have the Son of God in His correct place in our lives. If we do not have Jesus in his proper place in our lives, the light may be blocked. The light cannot shine as brightly as it should. As you examine your life, is the Son of God in His correct place in your own life? Is He first, or is He hidden? Maybe He is present, but being blocked by other things in your life. Today, focus on putting the Son in the right place of your life.
