And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. — 1 Kings 18:30
Not so long ago, a famous country musician performed a concert in Louisiana. I remember reading the news articles soon after that shared that a local seismograph recorded activity during the concert. In other words, the excitement of the crowd in the concert literally shook the ground around the area.
Similar things have happened throughout the past as well. People are excited to go to sporting events, concerts, and more to see their favorite athletes and musicians. They wear their clothes, share their sayings, and replay their actions. Children grow up wanting to be just like these “heroes.”
The truth is that across our nation, people are worshipping a variety of things. While I share some examples above, it even infiltrates the church. Instead of worshipping God in our churches, there are many times we see churches are worshipping everything else. It seems as if we have forgotten the God of our past.
Elijah was dealing with a similar situation. The people had moved on past God and were worshipping other things and Baal. Rather than join the crowd, Elijah did something different. He took a stand for God and verse 30 shares that he repaired the altar of God. He made God a priority again.
There are a lot of things in life that we enjoy, but we cannot let them take the place of God. God must remain our first priority and our first love. As Christians, we must point others back to God once again. The crowd may be against us, but with God, we are on the right side! We must make God our priority once again.
